Waterdrop vs Brita
Brita are the big daddies, the big kahuna, the big cheese of water filters in the UK, no doubt about that.
Their name rides roughshod over all others (metaphorically speaking) – for at least some people, they are water filters.
But all things move on. The Hoover brand of vacuum cleaners literally became the noun and verbs of choice for vacuum cleaning in British households.
Brita are not there yet, but have Waterdrop closed that gap, and might they even topple the mighty Brita from their long-held throne?
That’s what we wanted to find out.
This is Waterdrop vs Brita.
Enjoy 🙂

What does this data tell us?
Well, it tells us that these are 2 major worldwide brands, with a hefty online presence, and you’d assume some prettly loyal fans (after all, why else would they follow a brand’s social media?).

But Waterdrop have a much larger combined worldwide following than the combined total Brita’s accounts in multiple countries.

Customer Reviews & Feedback

But, after seeing how Brita’s brand dominates, can Waterdrop strike back with better customer feedback?
We wanted to guage the two company’s product quality as a whole so we evaluated the top 3 filter jugs for each company.

What can we learn from this?
Well, one one takeaway is that the Brita Marella is the most popular water filter jug on the market by far.
It doesn’t just have the most reviews, it has the best customer feedback on the market, with nearly 80% of all customers giving it a 5-star review.
The XL version of the Marella matches its 79%, but there’s a fairly steep drop, to 74% for Brita’s Style Essential model, which makes it the poorest reviewed product in the 6 models we evaluated.
Waterdrop take second place in this category, but it really is very close, they average 4.57 stars compared to Brita’s 4.63 stars. And 75.7% of their reviews get 5 stars, compared to Brita’s top 3 product average of 77.3% 5-star reviews.
It’s also interesting to note the difference in product strategy between the two companies.
Brita have clearly preferred to promote and market the Marella very heavily, with no other model of theirs even coming close to its sales quanitities and reputation.
Whereas Waterdrop’s strategy has been to spread their resources more evenly across several products. Their top 3 models are closer together in terms of sales and are reviewed quite similarly.
Both brands are accorded Top Brand status on Amazon, by the way. This is based on customers reviewing their experience with the company specifically, rather than a particular product.
These Top Brand awards are not thrown around by Amazon as easily as you’d perhaps think; only sellers with a a very large sales history and a ton of positive feedback from customers about the company as a whole can get it.
Brita have a 97% positive ratings (which is the highest we can remember ever seeing, by the way!) from over 10k customers, while Waterdrop have 90% positive ratings, also from over 10k customers. Both companies have a recent sales history of over 100,000 sales.

UK Presence
If you’re buying a product for the long-term (as you presumably are), you want to buy from a company that are going to stick around for the foreseeable!
As we discussed early, Brita are the dominant presence in the water filter jugs market in the UK. Waterdrop have emerged in the last few years, but have grown considerably and developed a strong reputation for after-care and product quality.
Brita are a German company. They have production facilities in the UK, Germany, Italy and China. They have a UK website and British numbers you can call in the event of any issues or problems with the product.
Waterdrop are a USA brand. Their products are most likely made in China. They have a warehouse in this country. They too have a UK website, but there’s only a USA number to call.
All in all, you’re in safe hands buying from either company. Brita have the been the market leader for many years, and their filter replacements, the Maxtra Pro cartridges are well-established and very widely available.
Waterdrop have less of a presence in the UK but they too have replacement cartridges widely available, and have developed a very strong UK market, partly due to their product quality and strong after-service.

Product Head to Head Comparison
Let’s see how the two brand’s products compare, in direct battle with one another.
We’ll compare like with like, this section should give you a very clear picture of the pros and cons of each model, and give you an easier choice than you’d otherwise have.
Hopefully this section can also give you a clearer insight into which exact models you should be comparing ie. which models are in direct competition, meeting the same need.
Product pages on online sites can be quite confusing with so many options, that you don’t even know how to start comparing them.
Waterdrop Elfin vs. Brita Marella
We’ll compare these two models as they are almost the same capacity, almost the same size, both are designed to fit in the fridge and they’re clearly targeted at the exact same customer base.
It’s interesting to see the two products have different strategies to ensure you can refill with one hand.
The Brita Marella has a flip top lid, just flip it up with your hand that is holding the jug and refill with water.
The Elfin model has an automatic water inlet, so you can refill it without needing to open the lid at all.
These little areas of attention to detail are the reason these two companies are two of the top water filter jug sellers; just a little reduction in faff and inconvenience can make people’s lives that little bit easier.
There’s one area that is a big advantage for the Waterdrop Elfin over the Marella, and that is flow rate. Water gets filtered through the filter media at a much higher rate in the Ludic, so it’s available for you to drink much faster.
The Elfin will give you your full 1.66L of filtered water capacity in just a minute. Even if that’s only in ideal conditions, it shouldn’t be too far from that.
The Marella’s flow rate is estimated at 3.2mL/s, meaning it’ll take just over 7 minutes to fill the full 1.4L of the jug’s filtered water capacity.
If you’re someone who’s often in a rush, this could be an important issue for you. No-one wants to hang around the house for an extra 7 minutes to get the filtered water to fill their water bottle.
Though of course, if it’s just a quick gulp of water you need before you go out, the Marella will also be fast enough to give you that within a minute.
This site is called Water Filter Geek, so what do we think of the quality of the water filters?
Both companies use high-end versions of activated carbon, and that’s by far the best option for a water filter jug. That gives you excellent removal of nasty tastes and odours, and things like chlorine and heavy metals.
If you want much more filtering power, consider a reverse osmosis system (here are the best RO filters), or an under sink filter. Though, beware, it costs a heck of a lot more than these filter jugs.
Marella’s filter, the MAXTRA PRO has proven ability to reduce limescale (by as much as 50%), not a claim made by Waterdrop. That may or not be something you need, but if you have problems associated with hard water, you can consider investing in a water softening machine. If you want a solution specifically to prevent limescale, here are some water filters that are highly effective at reducing limescale.

Waterdrop Lucid vs. Brita Marella XL
These models are the top-selling (as well as top-rated) 3.5L filter jugs offered by each company.
Both models preserve almost the same features for these bigger models.
So this Waterdrop water filter jug has a significantly faster flow rate than the Marella XL, not too far away from 10 times faster, in fact.
They’re almost the same size, except that the Marella XL has just over 1cm greater depth.
