Ah, well now.
This is something interesting. A reverse osmosis filter in the form of an ordinary run-of-the-mill countertop water filter.
Why did it surprise us? Because reverse osmosis filtration is kind of the Big Daddy of filtration methods. And you normally see it in under-sink or whole-home setups rather than countertop machines.
Countertop machines normally have relatively standard carbon or activated carbon filtering. This would be on another level entirely, if it’s done properly.
Not something we’ve seen before. So let’s check it out.

Rating the Skuma Filter
Let’s get to grips with our pros and cons from testing the Skuma water filter.

Pros and who would need this filter:
It outputs the cleanest, safest water
On close analysis, we’re satisfied that the Skuma filter is a true reverse osmosis system, and therefore produces a level of water quality beyond pretty much every other countertop filter dispenser on the market. Why? Because reverse osmosis filtration is simply the best method for removing harmful contaminants and purifying the water. Nothing else comes close. Reverse osmosis systems are what’s used at an industrial level, where they have significant need to ensure they use a completely clean water supply for their processes.
It’s like having your own personal supply of high quality mineral watert
We mentioned above how good the filtering quality is. But that’s not the only reason you’re effectively getting good quality bottled water in your own home. The Skuma water’s Infusion filters add healthy minerals back into the water, specifically Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium. These are the electrolytes your body needs to properly and effectively rehydrate.
UK Brand and Made in the UK
Buying directly from a British seller and brand means greater accountability and contactability. And as it happens, Skuma have been widely praised for the quality of their customer service, some even calling it their best customer service experience. Water filters are the type of product where you want to be sure you’re really getting what you’re supposed to be getting, as far as as filtration is concerned. UK regulations for water product manufacturing are strong, so you can be confident in the product.
Looks sleek
More important for some people than others. But looks awesome, no? We think so, anyway. The slimline, sleek black unit, and the cool blue backlight should ensure it will likely fit well with your kitchen.
Super convenience of instant hot water
This is a fantastic bonus feature, and again not something you’ll get with a typical reverse osmosis system. The healthiest possible water in your tea or coffee, as well as your drinking water. Yup, we’ll have that.
Drawbacks and weaknesses:
You have to refill the tank fairly regularly
The 5L tank, which has usable capacity 4.8L, is not huge. You’re supposed to drink 2.7 to 3.7L of water a day. If you have a household of 4 or 5 people who like to drink plenty of water (which is probably more rare than it should be!), you’re probably going to be refilling the tank on a daily basis. The good news? It’s not much of a hassle to do so. That said, it’s better than its rival, the Aquatru Reverse Osmosis countertop system, which has a 2.7L capacity.
Maximum one time use capacity is not super high, either
The maximum amount of water you can dispense at one time is 1.8L. To be honest, we’d really have liked to be able to fill a 2L water bottle, at least. Our hack? Fill a big water bottle with 1.8L of filtered water and keep it in the fridge. That way, you can top it up when needed.
It’s pricy
Check out the pricing, it’s not cheap. You’ll just have to decide if having this quality of water is really worth such an outlay.

What filter types does the Skuma have?
It has the reverse osmosis filter. That’s an exceptional filter type that removes literally hundreds of contaminants and impurities at extremely high efficiency levels. Here are the more traditional under-sink reverse osmosis systems.
It also has what Skuma call an Infusion filter. That’s basically a remineralisation filter, which the high end reverse osmosis systems also have. It adds the healthiest minerals into the water, giving it the mineral water quality we talked about earlier.

It’s a really well made product, and has genuine reverse osmosis filtration, that really works. And therefore, it’s pretty much the safest and highest quality of water you’re ever going to get in your home.
It does exactly what it says on the tin, then. It gives you your own personal supply of mineral water.
The only major drawbacks is that you have to refill it often, and you can’t get a lot of water at one time. That comes with it being a relatively slender unit. If you want more water available to you, or longer time between refills, you’ll just have to wait and see if they ever do a big beast version!
